The homepage hero is the hardest image to get right because it has to mean everything and depict nothing specific. It carries every article that will ever sit below it.

A pen nib on paper. Ink pooling at the tip.

I considered two versions of this image. In the first, the ink hangs as a droplet — potential energy, the mark about to be made. In the second, the ink has begun to bleed into the paper fibre. I chose the second. The publication has already started. The mark is being made. Posing as anticipation would be dishonest.

The image is the most elemental statement I could make about what this publication is: an instrument, a surface, and an intention. There is no subject matter, no editorial angle, no clever conceptual layer. There is only the act of putting ink on paper — which is what journalism is, before it's anything else.

The pen nib is rendered as technical illustration because that's The Record's visual language, but it's also the right choice for the object itself. A nib is a precision instrument. It has a slit, a tipping point, an ink channel. Drawing it with the same analytical attention you'd give a mechanical component says: we take the tool seriously. We take the act of writing seriously. The medium is not incidental.

The bottom third drops to charcoal for the headline: Dispatches from the frontier. The nib sits above it in open space, surrounded by nothing but warm grey paper. There's no context, no background, no setting. The instrument exists in isolation because the publication, at this stage, exists in isolation too. There is no precedent for what it's doing. The image should feel the same way.
